Pepsi Co. just launched a new sweepstakes called “Unlock The Tailgate”. Sounds great doesn’t it. The problem is a 5 star branding opportunity was missed by using the wrong domain.
They launched it on UnlockTheTrailer.com. Now someone else just registered the premium domain name UnLockTheTailgate.com and it’s parked.
Pepsi missed an excellent opportunity here to connect with football fans to have a chance to win a tailgate trailer for football games. Excellent idea, but a missed opportunity.
Now they will have to build up the brand because fans are going to go the logical domain name, UnLockTheTailgate.com, the name of the contest. When they arrive … nothing. Having fans lose their way to your contest is not the best way to build fan loyalty.
Maybe they should have named the contest “Unlock The Trailer” to match the dot com they registered or registered both an used a re-direct to the main site.
Lesson: Branding opportunities for products or services can be missed if the wrong domain name is used to market it.
